Comedians Groucho Marx and Fred Allen had much in common—they were old vaudevillians who learned their craft the hard way, through many years of trial and error on the road. Both, of course, were skilled ad-libbers renowned for their razor-sharp wit. Allen, whom John Steinbeck called “unquestionably the best humorist of our time,” held his own when dining or trading letters with Marx.Allen achieved the huge success in radio that eluded Marx, a circumstance ironically reversed in television. Marx’s most popular show would’ve been a great vehicle for Allen.
